Learn to crochet the African flower using this simple step by step instructions. The crochet African flower hexagon pattern is an easy and fun project to work on. You can use it to make stuffed animals, crochet blankets, bags and many other projects. You can also turn it into a square by using this African flower granny square pattern.

What you need.
- Yarn. you can use any yarn that you have lying around to learn the square before committing to a project. In the pattern I used a light weight yarn but fell free to use a worsted yarn or any yarn weight.
- crochet hook. I used a 4mm crochet hook with the light weight yarn.
- Pair of scissors & darning needle.

With the classic African flower granny square having at least 6 rounds, you can add an extra round between the first and second round to make it slightly bigger. I will name this round as optional round in the pattern below.

Notes.
- ch 1 & ch 2 used at the beginning of a round does not count as a stitch.
- Ch 3 at the beginning of a round counts as a stitch.
- The pattern uses 3 colors but you can use up to 4 colors. Every round can have its own color, except for round 2 & 3 which uses one color.
Stitches and Abbreviations.
ch – chain
dc – double crochet
sc – single crochet
sdc – standing double crochet.
st – stitch
sts – stitches
Crochet African Flower Pattern.
Start by making a magic circle (or ch 4 and join to the first ch with a slip stitch to form the magic circle)
Round 1.
step 1
With first color,
ch 3(counts as first dc), dc in the magic circle,
step 2
ch 2, *2 dc in the magic ring then ch 2
repeat step 2 four more times. [You should have 6 clusters of 2 dc stitches], slip stitch in the ch 3, ch 1 and cut first color.
Round 2.
Step 3.
Attach next color with a standing double crochet in any chain 2 space.
- Make a slip knot, then yarn over hook
- Insert the hook in any chain space, then yarn over and draw up a loop
- yarn over, then pull through the first 2 loops,
- Yarn over and pull trough the last 2 loops. Your standing dc is complete.
Step 4.
dc in the same space,
step 5.
chain 2, 2 dc in the same space.
step 6.
2 dc, chain 2, 2 dc in the next space.
step 7.
Repeat step 6 in each space all the way to end of round 2. join with slip stitch to the first stitch.
Round 3
step 8.
slip stitch in next stitch, slip stitch in the chain space then chain 2.
step 9.
7 dc in the chain 2 space
step 10.
7 dc in each chain 2 space to end of round.
step 11.
slip stitch in the first stitch, chain 1 & cut yarn.
Round 4.
step 12.
With your first color, attach yarn in the first stitch of round 4, sc in the same stitch and next 6 stitches
step 13.
insert hook in the space between double crochet clusters 2 rows below, yarn over and pull through
- yarn over and pull through the 2 loops, (spike sc )
step 14.
sc in next 7 sts, spike sc in the space between dc clusters 2 rows below.
repeat step 14 to end of round 4. slip stitch to first st, chain 1 and cut yarn.
Round 5.
step 15.
With 3rd color, attach yarn in the first stitch of previous round and sc in the same stitch, sc next 2 stitches.
step 16.
[ sc, chain 1, sc ] in the next stitch.
step 17.
sc in next 7 stitches.
step 18.
[ sc, chain 1, sc ] in the next stitch.
Repeat step 17 & step 18 until you have 4 stitches remaining.
step 19,
sc in the last 4 stitches, join to first st with a slip stitch.
Round 6.
step 20,
Chain 3 (counts as first dc), then dc in he next 3 stitches.
step 21.
dc, ch 2, dc in the chain 1 space.
step 22,
dc in each of the next stitches, until you reach a chain 1 space, [ dc, ch 1, dc] in the chain 1 space.
Repeat step 22 until you have 5 stitches remaining.
step 23.
dc in each of the last stitches
Step 24,
Join your round with either a slip stitch or the invisible joining Method.
