In this step by step tutorial, we will learn how to crochet the single crochet stitch.
After learning how to make a slip knot and chain, this is the next step in exploring your crochet journey. The Crochet single crochet is a fun stitch but needs patience because it’s slower than other stitches.
The single crochet stitch is abbreviated as SC and some patterns that are only available in chart form symbolizes it as a plus + or an x
Other basic Abbreviations that you will need to learn include:
YO = yarn over hook
rep = repeat (in order to shorten the sentences in patterns, this is used where you will need to repeat a set of instructions)
Pat/patt = pattern.
Supplies needed:
- Any worsted yarn or size 4
- 5.0 mm crochet hook
First step
SINGLE CROCHET STITCH PATTERN.
Chain any number of chains,
Row 1
Skip the first chain from hook, *insert hook in the next chain(step 1), yarn over and draw up a loop, pull the loop through the chain (you should have 2 loops (step 2)), yarn over (step 3) and pull through the two loops(step 4).* repeat the instructions within the asterisks to the end of row.
Row 2.
Chain 1(this does not count as a stitch) *insert hook in the first st (the v-shaped loops at the top of your work{see image below}), going through both loops, yarn over and draw up a loop, through the stitch (you should have 2 loops), yarn over and pull through the two loops.* repeat the instructions within the asterisks to the end of row.
Repeat row 2 until you master the stitch.
