The French beret has become a fashion icon in most European cities over the centuries.
This flat circle hat has evolved over thousands of years from a simple circle felted wool to high end fashion.
Initially used by the French as a symbol of resistance from the Nazi occupation of France to currently a fashion statement, the beret has served as an artistic symbol by the Parisian artists, military prestige and an iconic fashion statement.

Berets were originally made of felt but through the years we have seen them in knitted, sewn and crochet patterns making them so versatile.
In this particular pattern, we will learn how to crochet this coveted French beret in an easy and beginner friendly way.

Materials Needed.
- Milk cotton yarn.
- 3.75mm crochet hook, or any to obtain gauge.
- Pair of scissors

Pattern Notes.
- This beret can be made in 5 sizes; Toddler, Child, Tween, Adult woman(medium) and Adult woman(large), but this free option is available only in size adult medium.
- It is worked in the rounds and stitches worked in the back loop only.
- Do not join with sl st at end of every round.
- Repeat instructions between asterisk (**) as stated in the following statement.
- Always place marker at the beginning stitch of every round.
- Number at the end of every round is stitch count.

Cut yarn and weave in all loose ends inside of beret.
Stem.
Chain 8+1
Row 1.
Working on the back bumps only, hdc on the 2nd chain and each chain stitch. Turn. 8sts.
Row 2.
Ch2, hdc in each stitch across. 8sts.
Fold the stitches in half and join them with slip stitches across. Cut yarn leaving a long tail for attaching it to the beret.
Attaching the Stem.
Using the long tail on the stem, sew it around the first round of the beret until it is fastened. Sew the loose ends inside the beret.
