If you’ve learnt how to crochet the griddle stitch, then the houndstooth stitch will be a walk in the park. However, you should know how to change colors at the end of row but all these are detailed in the pattern so no worries if you do not.
We can all agree that we’ve seen this houndstooth print not only in crochet but also in knit, woven and other fabrics. This proves that it is loved by many and therefore you will turn heads wearing a garment made of it.
You can use the houndstooth stitch in lots of projects from crochet blankets, scarves, shawls, sweaters and many more. It is versatile and has a rich dense texture.
The construction of the houndstooth stitch can be done in two Methods:
- After finishing one row, you can cut the yarn at the end of the row then join or pick another color, this can save you yarn as opposed to method 2 but will leave you with lots of ends which you can decide to weave in or leave as tassels. or
- After finishing one row, you will carry the current yarn while working the next row with your second color. You will continue carrying yarn after every row until you end your project. This method uses much yarn as opposed to method 1 but it leaves you no ends to weave in. This is the method we will use in the pattern.

Notes.
- The pattern is written in US terminology.
- Ch1 at the beginning of new row doesn’t count as a stitch.
- The foundation chains is any odd number.
- After row 1, you will carry previous row yarn all through when working the next row.
- All rows start with a sc stitch and ends with a dc st. From row 2 onwards, place a single crochet stitch on the previous row double crochet st and a double crochet st in previous row single crochet st.
