If you’re looking to add timeless elegance to your crochet projects, say hello to the Houndstooth Stitch . This is a bold, high-contrast pattern that echoes the iconic look of luxury fashion houses like Dior. With its classic two-tone checkered design, the houndstooth stitch brings a refined, graphic edge to your makes, all while being surprisingly beginner-friendly.
Traditionally seen in black and white fabric, houndstooth is instantly recognizable for its jagged, geometric checks, and this crochet version captures that look perfectly using just three basic stitches: the chain stitch, single crochet and double crochet. The magic happens when you alternate stitch heights and colors across rows, creating the illusion of woven, high-fashion fabric.

One of the best things about the houndstooth stitch is its versatility. It looks stunning in classic black and white for that signature Dior-inspired style, but you can also experiment with bold colors, neutrals, or even a soft gradient to make it your own. Whether you’re making scarves, bags, pillows, or statement garments, this stitch will definitely turn heads.
This houndstooth stitch pattern is beginner friendly, with only 4 rows repeat. The main thing that sets it apart from the traditional houndstooth stitch is that, you don’t have to cut yarn at the end of every row, or carry it along a row. Sounds fun, right! You will however carry small floats after every 2 rows of one color.
The stitch is also reversible, making it perfect for scarves, blankets and any other project.
