Crochet this lovely star stitch with a simple step by step instructions accompanied by a video tutorial.
The crochet star stitch can seem intimidating but it is easy to learn. It only has 2 row repeat and once you master them, you are good to go.
The star stitch is perfect for crochet blankets, cardigans, beanies and any project that requires a textured stitch pattern.

Notes.
- The foundation chains are an even number.
- The pattern is written in US Terms.
- The stitch is only 2 rows repeat.
- Row 1 is worked in the back bumps of the foundation chains. see pic below.

Materials
- Yarn. You can use any yarn that you have around with recommended hook size. I used worsted weight cotton yarn.
- Hook. Use the hook size recommended on the yarn label. I used a 5.0 mm hook
- pair of scissors & yarn needle
Abbreviations and stitches used (US Terms)
ch = chain
yo – yarn over
hdc = half double crochet
How to crochet the star stitch pattern.
chain 24, or any even number of chains.
Row 1.
step 1,
Working in the back loops only,
skip 1 chain, ** insert hook in the next chain, yarn over and pull up a loop,
repeat step 1 from ** until you have 6 loops on your hook
step 2,
yarn over and pull through all the 6 loops
step 3
then chain 1. to form the first star.
step 4
insert hook in the chain 1 of of previous star, yarn over and pull through (2 loops),
step 5,
insert hook in the last loop of previous star stitch, yarn over and pull through (3 loops)
step 6,
insert hook in the last chain where you worked the previous star, yarn over and pull through (4 loops)
step 7.
[insert hook in the next chain, yarn over and pull through] repeat this step in the next chain, (6 loops)
step 8.
yarn over and pull through all the 6 loops then chain 1. [second star complete]
repeat steps 4,5,6,7,8, until the end of row 1.
Step 9.
insert hook in the last chain 1 space, yarn over and pull through, (2 loops)
step 10.
Insert hook in the very last chain stitch, yarn over and pull through, (3 loops on hook)
step 11,
yarn over, pull through the first 2 loops,
then pull through the last 2 loops to finish row 1.
Row 2.
Turn your work, in this row, we are going to work in the chain 1 spaces that closed the stars of row 1. see pic below.
step 12.
without chaining 1, place 2 half double crochets in each chain space, until you reach the end.
step 13,
slip stitch in the very last chain stitch.
Row 3.
step 14.
Turn then chain 3,
step 15,
skip first chain, {insert hook in the next chain and pull up a loop} repeat pattern in {}, for the next chain (3 loops on hook)
step 16.
insert hook in the first stitch and pull up a loop, insert hook in the next 2 stitches, drawing loops in each (6 loops on hook)
step 17
yarn over and draw through all the 6 loops, then chain 1 to close up the star,
step 18
insert hook in the chain space of previous star and draw a loop,
insert hook in the last loop of previous star and draw a loop,
insert hook in the last stitch of previous star and draw a loop,
insert hook in the next 2 stitches and draw a loop in each. (6 loops on hook)
step 19.
yarn over and draw through all the 6 loops, then chain 1.
Repeat step 18 and 19 all the way to end of row 3.
step 20,
insert hook in the last chain 1 space, yarn over and pull through, (2 loops)
Insert hook in the last stitch, yarn over and draw a loop, (3 loops)
Step 21.
Yarn over, pull through the first 2 loops, then yarn over and pull through the last 2 loops.
Now repeat row 2 and row 3 pattern until you finish your project. Make sure to finish on row 2 pattern.
