The half double crochet stitch also abbreviated as HDC is by far my favorite stitch in the basic stitches category. It is longer than the single crochet stitch, but shorter than a double. With half double crochet alone, you can make several projects from washcloths to potholders, to socks, to blankets and even cardigans and sweaters.
What You Will Need.
- Medium weight/ worsted yarn. Acrylic will be the best option if you’re just starting out.
- 5mm crochet hook.

Crochet half double crochet stitch {hdc}
Start by chaining any number of stitches. refer to the chain stitch if you don’t know how to do it.
Row 1
Skip the first 2 chains from the hook (these do not count as a stitch),*yarn over hook, Insert hook in the next chain, Yarn over and draw up a loop (you should have 3 loops on your hook), Yarn over and draw through all the 3 loops.*
Repeat the pattern within the asterisk * or the one in bold, above. Turn
Row 2.
Chain 2(this does not count as a stitch),yarn over, insert hook in the first stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through all the 3 loops*yarn over, Insert hook in the next stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through all the 3 loops.* repeat this step 2 to the end of row. Turn
Repeat row 2 pattern until you master the stitch. Remember the chain 2 at the beginning of row does not count as a stitch. So do not work in it.
Repeat your rows, always counting the stitches at the end of every row.
The stitch count should be constant and the number should be your foundation chains minus 2.
you can save it for later.
